What are the 3 main causes of neck pain?

Neck pain can happen any number of ways. It can happen after long drives in the car, carrying groceries or heavy bags, doing activities, like yard work, especially if you haven’t done it in a long time, and the list goes on.

The 3 main causes of neck pain are sleeping or lying in a bad position/posture, cell phone or computer use, and activities and hobbies that cause the neck to either look up or down for long periods of time.

What actually happens to your neck?

These are the activities that we find ourselves doing every day, hour after hour. Having our neck in these positions for long periods of time, causes us to overstretch the muscles, and even stretch and change the length of the ligaments that are attaching muscles to bones, and bones to the other bones of the spine.

That is why over a period of time these activities that cause us neck pain, actually start to change our posture and can put stress on the spine and the discs, which over time can lead to arthritis, degeneration, and advanced aging of the spine.

What can happen over time if you ignore neck pain?

That is why it is so important that these top causes of neck pain be addressed before these problems get worse and it is harder to get relief for your neck pain. This will not only provide you with relief, but will also protect your muscles, ligaments, spine and discs from future damage. 

If you were to continue with these habits, without making changes or receiving care to restore health to these areas, it is very likely that your episodes of neck pain would continue to get worse and could even possibly lead to headaches and radiating pain into your arms and hands.

How can you get fast neck pain relief?

The first thing you want to do is make sure that you are in a position that allows for good posture and a neutral head position so that your neck muscles, ligaments, and spine are not abnormally stretched in bad positions for long periods of time.

If you are in a position where you have to put your neck in compromising postures, then do your best to take as many breaks as possible from that posture. The more breaks you can take from abnormal postures to the neck, the less pain you’ll experience in your neck.

What therapies are best for neck pain and neck relief?

One, the best thing you can do for neck pain is stop what’s causing the neck pain which we discussed above, which was keep your neck out of positions that caused the muscles and ligaments to be over, stretched for long periods of time.

Two, start by applying ice to the painful area for 15 minutes on, and 30 minutes off, make sure you protect your skin from the cold. Try to do at least six rounds.

Three, if you find that ice isn’t benefiting you, some people like to use heat, especially if it’s a chronic problem that’s been going on for a long time. Do not heat your neck for longer than 15 minutes. The heat may be soothing and relaxing, but when you take the heat off, if you’ve had it on too long, and your neck starts to cool down, it can cause it to spasm.

Four, there are many great muscle therapy tools available. However, whenever using a muscle therapy tool when you are in pain, it is always better to start slow and do less. You can always add more over the next couple of days if you find that your muscle therapy technique is working. 

Some great muscle therapy tools include myofascial rolling trigger sticks, trigger point cane/hook, foam rollers, lasers, and more for when you are in pain.

If the pain is subsiding or you have muscle tightness, more aggressive techniques would include massage, guns, and rumble rollers. However wherever you are starting it is always good to start slow and work your way up.

Five, and most important, have your neck evaluated by a chiropractor. It is important to know what the overall health of your neck is and how abnormal postures or positions have impacted your neck. This will not only be helpful for finding relief, but it will also allow you to make sure that your neck is not on a negative path towards arthritis, degeneration, or disc disease, which can cause more problems as you age.

There are many ways to stretch! However this one “YIN YOGA” style of stretching goes deeper than any of the other stretches, all the way down to the joints. This does not make them better than all the other stretches, just important in their own unique way.

These stretches require light tension over time, at least 2 minutes and up to 8 or more minutes, to get down to the tendon, ligament, disc, and joint level. The reward and benefits are well worth your time considering not many other stretches can reach these areas. 

Joint health is the foundation of movement, so it is important that we have stretches to keep our joints healthy. Joint health requires alignment, freely moving “unstuck” joints, that have a full range of motion. The less range of motion or the more stuck a joint gets, the faster it ages. 

The better your joints move, the longer the joints last. Joints also provide a lot of stimulation to the brain, resulting in positive emotions and hormones. Just think about how you feel after taking a walk. 

Equally if not more important is their roll in protecting the nerves, the “LIFE LINES” that run through the joints of the spine which carry life, health, and healing throughout our body. 

Spending time on muscle and joint health has a tremendous return and impact on you ability to be more active throughout all the years of your life. 

Start slow, it is a life time process. If you have never done these type of stretches before start with 20-30 seconds, work your way up to 1-2 minutes, and over time you will be getting deeper into the stretches for longer periods of time. Relax your mind, relax your body, and let gravity do the work.

Wait until you see the difference this style of stretching will have on your favorite activities and in your daily living habits.

Remember to teach this type of stretching to your children, family, and friends.

Try a number of “Yin Yoga” videos to find how all the different stretches feel. Stretches the muscles and joints that are a problem more often, at least 3 days a week. Total Body Stretch and Strengthen Walk in the Park

While you are taking your walk or hike, there are a number of exercises you can do to stretch and strengthen your entire body. Here is an example in this video. A lot of times you will be able to find things you can use for exercises in your environment. You can mix and match however you like by doing more walking/hiking, stretching or strengthening components, you can spend more time on one or a couple body parts, and you can even do sets in between walking/hiking. Enjoy the outdoors, there is a beautiful connection between exercise and nature.

The great outdoors are my favorite place to exercise. In addition to being a real place to hike, jog, bike, climb, exercise, sit, think…they are also a great place to stretch. While on a hike, I found this tree and this view. One stretch at a time I enjoyed this routine in nature. I hope this gives you another way to enjoy your health while being outdoors.
